What does a futurist do?

Our mission as a social futurist is to help clients and employers anticipate significant changes that lie ahead in order to influence and manage those changes to achieve their long-term goals.

Since long-term predictive forecasts are rarely accurate, futurists describe alternative plausible and preferable futures, in addition to the expected future. Instead of limiting themselves to traditional forecasters’ quantitative methods, futurists also use a balance of qualitative and quantitative tools.

Professional futurists emphasise systemic and transformational change as opposed to traditional forecasters and planners who focus on incremental change based on existing conditions and trends.

The underlying principle is that while nobody can truly PREDICT THE FUTURE, good planning should consider a range of possibilities to better prepare you for a variety of possible future outcomes.

How we add value

We help people to think about what they are not thinking about.

We help challenge your assumptions and beliefs and hold them up to you like a mirror so you can see how you make sense of your business model and social environment.

People tend naturally to develop simplified ways of making sense of the world. That’s how our minds are able to filter and process enormous amounts of received information.  But often this means we are very good at only letting in the information that agrees with those filters. This gives rise to a form of ‘information blindness’!

Our purpose is to assist people and organisations to see with fresh eyes, enabling them to develop pathways for possible futures beyond the expected, and avoiding the ‘surprises’ of the unexpected.

What can we do?

How do we do it?

First we help you determine the nature of the issues: then we design an approach that meets your specific needs.

No two clients are the same: we recognise your situation is unique and tailor our services to your needs.

Not all situations call for a complex approach:  we only apply the tools that are relevant to your situation: simple tools for simple problems, more advanced approaches for complex problems.
